CASSS honours Peter Schoenmakers for outstanding achievements in separation science
The international society for separation science CASSS has awarded professor Peter Schoenmakers its annual award for outstanding achievements in separation science. He received his award last week during the 43rd International Symposium on High Performance Liquid Phase Separations and Related Techniques (HPLC 2015) in Beijing, China.
The 20th annual CASSS award honours Professor Schoenmakers' life-long contributions to the field of separation science, with particular consideration for his development of new methods and techniques.
The announcement of the prize mentions Schoenmakers' research in the area of polymer separations, including size-exclusion chromatography, (interactive) liquid chromatography, comprehensive two- dimensional liquid chromatography, molecular-topography fractionation, matrix-assisted laser-desorption/ionization mass spectrometry, and pyrolysis gas chromatography - mass spectrometry.
Furthermore it refers to his involvement as the Director of Education for TI-COAST. TI-COAST (Top Institute Comprehensive Analytical Science and Technology), was created in 2008 with the goal of including the strengthening of discipline-oriented research within analytical sciences in the Netherlands and increasing both the quality and quantity of analytical chemists trained in the country.
Career and awards
During his career, Professor Schoenmakers has been a member of many committees and boards, and has served as editor of the Journal of Chromatography A. He has also chaired several international conferences, including the International Symposium on High-Performance Liquid-Phase Separations, for which he also serves on the Permanent Scientific Committee. Professor Schoenmakers has also published nearly 200 original papers on chromatography and other areas within analytical chemistry. He is the author of “Optimization of Chromatographic Selectivity”, which was published by Elsevier.
Professor Schoenmakers has received a great deal of international recognition. A few of his numerous honors include the 2015 Eastern Analytical Award for Excellence in Separation Science, the 2011 Martin medal of the Chromatographic Society, and the 2014 John H. Knox Medal of the Royal Society of Chemistry. Both in 2013 and 2015 The Analytical Scientist named Schoenmakers seventh on the list of most influential analytical chemists in the world.
