UvA bioplastic start-up is finalist for Herman Wijffels Innovation Award

The world's first thermoset bioplastic, developed at the Van 't Hoff Institute for Molecular Sciences, is in the race for the Herman Wijffels Innovation Award 2015 of Rabobank. Plantics BV, a start-up company of the Research Priority Area Sustainable Chemistry, is one of the finalists in the category “Circular Economy”. Plantics is also competing for the Popular Prize.

A total of 12 finalists compete for the Herman Wijffels Innovation Award 2015 in three categories: Food&Agri, Circular Economy and Vital Communities & Care. In each category a prize of 30,000 euro will be awarded. The Popular Prize is 5,000 euro.

A jury of experts in the fields of innovation and sustainability will assess the finalists on innovative power, societal impact, customer focus and profitability. The winners wil be announced Thursday 12 November during the Herman Wijffels Innovation Event at the Automotive Campus in Helmond.

Sustainable Chemistry

Thermoset resins are plastics that cure upon heating and are non-deformable thereafter. The disadvantage of these popular materials is their poor recyclability. The new Amsterdam bio-plastic is fully biodegradable, compostable and made of renewable resources. It can be used as granulate, foam and composite. 

The bioplastic was invented by accident by Dr Albert Alberts and Prof. Dr Gadi Rothenberg at the research group for Heterogeneous Catalysis and Sustainable Chemistry, which is part of the UvA Research Priority Area Sustainable Chemistry. It is now being commercialised by Plantics BV.
