Huib Bakker appointed as new director of FOM Institute AMOLF
Professor Huib Bakker has been appointed as director of FOM Institute AMOLF, effective 1 February 2016. He succeeds Vinod Subramaniam, who has taken up the post as rector of Vrije Universiteit Amsterdam. Bakker is professor by special appointment at the University of Amsterdam (UvA) and a member of the Royal Netherlands Academy of Arts and Sciences.
Professor Bakker (1965) has been interim director of AMOLF since September 2015. He has an intimate knowledge of the institute. In addition to having done his doctoral research at AMOLF, he has also headed the institute’s department of Molecular Biophysics since 2003. In 2001, Bakker was appointed professor of Ultrafast Spectroscopy of Molecules in the Condensed Phase within the Molecular Photonics group at the UvA's Van 't Hoff Institute of Molecular Sciences.
FOM Institute AMOLF is one of the research laboratories of the Foundation for Fundamental Research on Matter (FOM), which is part of the Netherlands Organisation for Scientific Research (NWO). AMOLF employs about 130 fte research staff and 70 fte support staff. AMOLF's annual budget is 14 million euro. The institute is located in Science Park Amsterdam.
