The jury for the Amsterdam Science & Innovation Award 2016 has announced the selection of the ten finalists. Two of them involve researchers of the Van 't Hoff Institute for Molecular Sciences. The winner will be announced on 26 May.
Amsterdam Science & Innovation Award 2016

The Amsterdam Science & Innovation Award is an annual competition for the most innovative idea resulting from scientific research at all Amsterdam universities and research institutes. The winner of will be awarded with € 10.000. The 2016 final involves two HIMS projects of Analytical Chemistry researchers:

Arend Kolk

competes with the Handheld device for the diagnosis of tuberculosis, developed in cooperation with Hans-Gerd Janssen and Marta Mourao. The proposed handheld device will be based on gas chromatography and will combine a advanced (yet simple) sample preparation method and a simple detector (e.g. a flame ionisation detector or a pulse discharge detector). The device will enable rapid diagnosis of tuberculosis.

Henrik Cornelisson van de Ven

joins the competition with his concept of the Reflectron Modulation Interface (ReMI). Under the motto Making the incompatible compatible in analytical chemistry, Henrik proposes a device that will open up a world of possibilities for everyone who relies on chemical information in their research. It can combine two processes into one system, saving time and money, or enable the coupling of instruments that provide complementary information to provide completely new scientific insights.

Audience Award

This year the element of an Audience Award will be added to the competition. Starting from 9 May at 9:00 AM until 25 May at 6:00 PM all competing projects presented on the website of IXA will be accompanied by a voting link so that the audience can vote for their favourite idea. On May 26th the winner of the Audience Award will be awarded with EUR 5.000.-
