9 January 2017

Professor H.M. Buhrman and Professor J.N. H. Reek have been appointed as distinguished research professors at the Faculty of Science with effect from 1 January 2017. The professors will succeed the current distinguished research professors, Jos Engelen and Kareljan Schoutens.

In his position as a distinguished research professor, Joost Reek, professor of supramolecular catalysis at the Van 't Hoff Institute for Molecular Sciences, will serve as the figurehead of the research focus area of Sustainable Chemistry and help to facilitate its ongoing development.

Meanwhile, Harry Buhrman, professor of computing science at the Institute for Logic, Language and Computation, will serve as the figurehead for the quantum software consortium QuSoft and work to develop it further in his capacity as a distinguished research professor.

In addition to research, a distinguished research professor is tasked with advising the dean on relevant administrative issues that are critical to the development of the exact sciences. Distinguished research professors are able to carry out their work without being associated with a specific institute, meaning that they not bound by any predefined obligations. Reek and Buhrman are the eighth and ninth people since 2005 to be appointed to this position, which enables them to make a contribution to academic development within the Faculty of Science.
