Jurn Heinen and Iris van de Pol receive UvA 385 anniversary scholarship

18 September 2017

Faculty of Science PhD candidates Jurn Heinen and Iris van de Pol were awarded the UvA 385 scholarship, given out at the occasion of UvA's 385 anniversary. The anniversary scholarship was instituted to offer a new generation of researchers the opportunity to gain international experience. In addition to Heinen and Van de Pol, twenty PhD candidates from other faculties received the scholarship.

For young researchers, gaining experience abroad is of great importance for their career in the international academic environment. At the same time, research allowances and means for PhD candidates are very restricted. To mark the occasion of UvA's anniversary, a scholarship was made available of up to €3,000 for 22 PhD candidates.

Jurn Heinen is PhD candidate at the Van ’t Hoff Institute for Molecular Sciences (HIMS)
'
This scholarship allowed me to conduct experimental research at Sandia National Laboratories, one of the national research labs in the US. Here, I measured temperature-dependent mechanical properties of a metal-organic framework. The combination of computer simulations and experiments created for me news insights and boosted my PhD research considerably.'

Iris van de Pol is PhD candidate at the Institute for Logic, Language and Computation (ILLC)
'This scholarship gives me the opportunity to visit the Center for the Study of Language and Information (CSLI) at Stanford University for a period of three months. My research is about pragmatic communication between people; that is, our capacity to understand each other without literally saying what we mean, for example by using the context or background information. I study this from a computational perspective, making use of different kinds of logic and game theory. CSLI brings together researchers from different disciplines (such as logic, philosophy, cognitive science, and psychology), which is exactly what I need for my research.’

Continuation of scholarship

To keep this special scholarship available for PhD candidates even after the anniversary year, the Amsterdam University Fund is starting a funding campaign. For more information, visit the website of the Amsterdam University Fund.
