On 20 April, high school students Hannah van den Brink, William van Hell and Reinard van Lent of the Van Lodenstein College in Amersfoort won the fifth edition of the competition 'Imagination at Work' organized by Centrum JongerenCommunicatie Chemie (C3). PhD candidate Steven Beijer of the Van 't Hoff Institute for Molecular Sciences co-supervised their project on the sustainable removal of phosphate from wastewater.

Imagination at Work is a national competition in which high school students work on sustainability issues together with researchers from the chemical and life sciences. The research is carried out as part of their profile assignment in the final phase of their high school education. The research of the three winners focused on the question of which removal of phosphate from synthetic wastewater is the more sustainable: through the formation of struvite, or vivianite? The project was supervised by their teacher Jan-Jaap Hofman at the Van Lodenstein College together with UvA PhD candidate Steven Beijer. According to the jury, the winners not only excelled in their research but also held a balanced presentation that gave a good insight into their project and contained clear graphics in a beautiful design. The winners each receive 500 euros as a contribution to their studies.
