I head the heterogeneous catalysis and sustainable chemistry group at the UvA. We design new catalysts for bulk chemicals and clean energy applications. My research deals with decarbonisation, understanding reactions at surfaces, and creating value from waste. I am also passionate about innovation and entrepreneurship. As a teacher, I have written three textbooks: Catalysis, Ceramic Membranes, and Innovation Management in Sustainable Chemistry. I also the editor-in-chief of the Handbook of Porous Materials and the Energy & Climate reference series.
Since 2024 I am also Distinguished Visiting Professor at the Department of Energy & Power Engineering of Tsinghua University.
My research philosophy is based on two quotes. The first is by Albert Einstein, who said "If we knew what we're doing, it wouldn't be called research". Research must involve uncertainty and a chance of failure. If you're often successful, go out of your comfort zone. Failure is the mother of success.
The second quote, by John Thomas, is: "Everything is interesting, but not everything is important". For me, important research means solving problems that affect large numbers of people.
