We are currently working on wide band gap perovskites for tandem solar cells. PhD student Le-Ting Wang is making doped perovskite thin films by spin-coating,
and stuying their properties with different techniques, such as XRD, photoluminescence, confocal microscopy,
optical microscopy, time resolved photoluminescence. Absolute photoluminescence quantum yield.
Melania Janiak is joining us, for an MSc project in 2025/2026.

The interaction of light and matter is the basis of my research. We are currently working on photo-activated (hybrid nano) materials for energy and health. We develop and study new materials for thin film solar cells (doping and crystal orientation in perovskites) as well as new photoactive systems for medical applications (new photo-dynamic anti-cancer materials, activated by NIR light). Photoinduced electron and energy transfer in molecular-, supramolecular- and nano-systems are key processes.
We are currently working on the following topics:
Dr. Williams is assistant professor in the Molecular Photonics Group of the HIMS at the Universiteit van Amsterdam (UvA) since 1999. In 1998 he worked with Prof. Nick J. Turro on triplet sensitization of commercial photoinitiators (at Columbia University in the city of New York). At the Max-Planck institut in Mülheim he worked with Prof. Silvia E. Braslavsky on opto-acoustics in 1997. In 1996 he did his PhD on buckyballs (C60) and electron transfer with Prof. Jan W. Verhoeven at UvA.
Above are the links to my Research-ID, Research-gate, Google Scholar and ORCID ID pages.
Perovskite Thin Film Materials Stabilized and Enhanced by Zinc(II) Doping
Air-Stable and Oriented Mixed Lead Halide Perovskite (FA/MA) by the One-Step Deposition Method Using Zinc Iodide and an Alkylammonium Additive
It is nice to see that the RSC appreciates my contributions!
New publication on polymer solar cell materials:
The Master-Thesis work of Hung-Cheng Chen has now been published. With femtosecond transient absorption of layers on quartz we saw that charges form and than create locally excited triplet states on the polymer.
At high laser power fast singlet-singlet annihilation led to "hot singlet fission". Through this work we came up with a picture of how the character of the charge transfer state (compact or delocalized, and its exchange integral J) determines the mechanisms of triplet formation by charge recombinaiton (fast SOCT ISC or slow H-HFI ISC).

In the blend of these two organic molecules ( in red and in yellow) we observed that charges recombine into a triplet state localized on the peryelene bisimide dye. This process occurs with two rates, a fast one (green arrow) and a slow one (pink arrow). This indicates two different mechanisms of triplet formation from the charged states.
