Steven Beijer, PhD candidate at the University of Amsterdam's Van 't Hoff Institute for Molecular Sciences (HIMS), has won a Unilever Research Prize 2019. On Thursday 12 December, he received his prize during the award ceremony at Unilever's new Foods Innovation Centre in Wageningen.

Beijer is currently a PhD student with associate professor Chris Slootweg from the Synthetic Organic Chemistry group at HIMS. There he also performed his master's research into 'Creating valuable phosphorus products from low-value feedstocks' for which he received his prize. In his current research, Beijer works in close cooperation with the newly started spin-off company SusPhos.

The annual Unilever Research Prize is presented to 13 outstanding students - one from each Dutch university. The prize was established in 1956 to strengthen the bond between industry and academic research, and to motivate students to excel. Today, the prize rewards research in the field of one or more UN Sustainable Development Goals. Each winner of the Unilever Research Prize receives a cheque for €2,500 and a glass sculpture.
