In the Dutch tradition of celebrating the monarch’s birthday, citizens take to the streets to sell their used products or render playful and entertaining services. On the recent ‘King’s Day’ held last Thursday, chemistry PhD students Lotte Metz and Marie Brands of the Van ’t Hoff Institute for Molecular Sciences performed everyday science experiments for everybody to enjoy.

“It was a perfect day, we had a lot of fun”, says Metz who took the initiative and persuaded Brands to join her. The duo called their initiative the 'chemiekusjes', a wordplay in Dutch that translates in a way as the 'tiny chemists'. “Rockets fueled with baking powder and vinegar were definitely the crowd’s favorite”, Brands adds. “Anything that goes with a bang is always fun to watch.”
