It was with sadness that we received the news of the death of Prof. Upendra K. Pandit on 16 June. As the founder of bioorganic chemistry at the University of Amsterdam, his pioneering contributions have been of valuable and lasting significance.

Upendra Kuman Pandit (1930) received his PhD at the University of Southern California, Los Angeles (1958) investigating synthetic analogs of cortical steroids. He then worked as a postdoctoral researcher at the School of Medicine of The Johns Hopkins University. In 1961, he joined the staff of the Organic Chemistry Laboratory of the University of Amsterdam. In 1972, he was appointed Professor of Organic Chemistry, a position he held until his retirement in 1996.

Pandit was a well-known organic chemist that continued to contribute to many scientific papers as an emeritus professor. He has served as president of the Organic and Biomolecular Chemistry division of IUPAC.
