The Functional Materials Group focuses on developing fundamental knowledge and materials that enable low-energy routes for the synthesis of chemicals, efficient molecular separations and selective chemical sensing.
Our inspiration for research comes from the main challenges associated with the technologies of today’s society. We aim at achieving innovation which stems from two perspectives:
understanding the molecular chemistry effects at the nanoscale; and
designing nanomaterials and developing catalysts and miniature devices that exploit nanoscale effects.
We are located in the Amsterdam Science Park campus with state-of-the-art synthesis laboratories, a broad range of analytical techniques, including spectroscopic, surface characterization and microscopy techniques. Our group has access to synchrotron facilities (ALS-Berkeley) and cooperates closely with Spark 904, a research-intensive business concerned with chemical analysis and spectroscopy as well as the scale-up of synthesis.
